Tentative or not?

English Only...


Today, my tutor said English is considerably tentative language compared with Spanish. She gave us one example.

If I take a class held by Spanish lecturer, s/he command you guys students. Like "distribute papers to all classmates." On the other hand, English teacher ask you to do something like "would you mind handing papers over to all students?" Already 4 weeks have passed since I came here in Manchester, what our tutor did has been like that. There is no doubt to her opinion.

But, as a Japanese, I would like to say Japanese or Japanese language is much more tentative than English. For instance, when I ask my boss or senior person to do sth, I have to say like "I would appreciate if you could do it." (=◯◯して頂けると幸いです？)

I think many Japanese think regard English as a very direct communication tool. But it's not true. People here naturally use polite ways  like "if you don't mind, ..." or "Could I ask a favour of you?" （◯◯して頂くことできますでしょうか？）

I personally think that Japanese includes meaning between lines or behind what we say. So, that's too much polite and sometimes I feel like I am wasting my time.


Plus, I would like to give an example.


When you write an email to your tutor, following way can be acceptable.


Hi ◯◯ (name),

But  in Japanese

◯◯様
大変お世話になります...


I get tired from writing in such an amount of letters.


So, what I want to say is English is tentative enough and Japanese is too tentative to tell own opinion.
